Holiday Anxiety – Some Tips to Help You Through It
I am writing about a topic that is related to Anxiety and Panic Attacks, but is not necessarily a full fledged disorder. What I am referring to is the Anxiety that most of us feel around the Holiday season. This is especially true now a days because of how unstable our economy has become.
The average person is having to make due with less these days, and it is definitely showing when it comes to the amount of money that they are able to spend during the many special occasions throughout the year.
The holiday that i am going to focus on is the one that causes the most anxiety among people. It is of course Christmas. For the children in our lives Christmas is a wonderful magical time of year, filled with joy and wonder. On the other hand for a lot of adults it can be the most stressful and anxiety inducing time.
This is often due to the fact that they are just barely making ends meet throughout the year and the holiday season puts added stress and financial pressure on them. Causing a major increase in anxiety. But the mounting doubt load and confusion does not have to be a deal breaker if you just keep some very simple things in mind before the shopping trips and family get togethers takes place.
The first thing that everyone needs to remember, is also something that most of use have forgotten (in our busy lives) It is that Christmas is not only about the material things that most of use think about at this time of year, but is about relaxing, being thankful and sharing our time with the people we care about.
I am not saying that giving or receiving a gift would not be nice, but if you are not in a financial position to give to everyone on your list. The majority of the people in our lives would more than understand, since this time of year is very difficult for pretty much everyone. Besides it is the children that matter most of all, so focusing on making their holiday a great experience is the one thing that can bring us joy in this stress filled time.
You are probably thinking. That this is all well and good but what about the expensive toys and tech gifts that the kids are asking for.The only advice i can give is that you talk to your children before the big day comes and explain to them that mom and/or dad are not going to be able to get everything on their list this year, and that they will have to make shorter more realistic list of some of the things that they would really like to have.
You would be very surprised, but most children probably already figured that out for themselves and although they may be slightly disappointed. They will most likely be very happy that they will be getting the gifts that they are really looking forward to.
Once all of that is out of the way you can get down to the nitty gritty, the shopping trip. Before you set out its a good idea to make a list of the things you are going to buy and how much money you are going to spend.
You should also try to avoid using credit cards to make purchases,if at all possible. If you have to use them I would recommend that you figure out how much the items you are planning to buy will cost and stick as close to that figure as possible. Shopping around and buying online are also very good ideas as most items are available for a more reasonable price online.
Another good idea is if you know roughly how much money the items will cost you could get a cash advance from your credit card ahead of time and leave the credit cards at home so that you are not tempted to spend more than you can afford. As we all know those credit cards can burn a hole in your pocket if you are not careful. Hopefully these tips will help you have a much more relaxed and anxiety free holiday.
So remember! Try not to be so hard on yourself, and enjoy the the holidays.
